Mankulam and Anakulam – A Hidden Gem in Munnar

Who doesn't love a sudden weekend getaway with friends? 5 months back, my college friends and I found ourselves in Madurai for a wedding. As the wedding festivities wound down on Friday, we started brainstorming ideas for how to spend the rest of the weekend. That's when I suggested Mankulam and Anakulam, a hidden gem nestled in the Munnar hills of Kerala.

Our impromptu trip began with a Friday evening bus ride from Madurai to Theni. After a quick bite and tea break at the Theni bus stand at 3:30 AM, we hopped on a Munnar bus, arriving at our destination by 8:00 AM. A refreshing cup of "kattan chaya" later, we met our jeep driver, a friendly and talkative "chetta" who would be our guide for the next two days.

Day 1: Off-Roading Adventures and Stunning Scenery (Mankulam)
  • Following the chetta's recommendation, we tried "puttu and kadala curry," a traditional Kerala breakfast that was absolutely delicious. I highly recommend trying local specialties whenever you travel – skip the usual idli, dosa, and pongal, and embrace the unique flavors of the region!
  • With full bellies and excited hearts, we set off for Mankulam. The jeep ride was filled with music and laughter as we shared stories about our college days. The scenery along the way was breathtaking – lush green hills, misty valleys, and winding roads.

  • Reaching Mankulam at 10:00 AM, we freshened up in our room, which offered stunning views of the surroundings. Soon, we were off again, this time to Head on Mankulam, a perfect spot for sightseeing.
  • Next up was Viripara Waterfalls, a safe and beautiful haven for a refreshing dip. The falls boast separate, secure changing areas for both boys and girls, making it a perfect spot for families with children who are sure to enjoy the cool, cascading waters.

  • After changing into dry clothes, we devoured a delicious lunch of fish fry, fish curry, rice, and koottu poriyal.
  • The afternoon was full of adventure. We tackled the trek to Tiger Cave and Hanging Bridge, enjoying the stunning views and challenging ourselves with the climbs. A photoshoot on the hanging bridge was a must!

  • But the highlight of the day was definitely the 4:00 PM off-road jeep safari through the forest. It was an adrenaline-pumping adventure, filled with the sounds of birds and the thrill of navigating the rough terrain. Remember to wear good shoes and bring a first-aid kit, as leeches are common in these parts.

  • By the time we reached our tent stay in the middle of the forest, we were exhausted but exhilarated. Staying in a tent amidst nature was a unique experience that I highly recommend – it's a great alternative to hotel rooms, especially for children.
  • As the evening settled in, we enjoyed a campfire with music and dancing, bonding with other travelers and swapping stories under the starlit sky. A delicious dinner of parotta, idiappam, chicken curry, rice, rasam, and channa masala rounded off the perfect day.

Day 2: More Waterfalls, Elephants, and Local Delights

  • Waking up to stunning mountain views and another cup of kattan chaya was magical. The traditional Kerala breakfast of appam and stew was the perfect way to fuel up for another day of exploration.

  • Our second day started with an adventurous jeep safari to Perumankuthu waterfalls. This one's a bit tricky, so be careful if you have children. On the way back, we stopped at a tea shop for some delicious egg bondas – a must-try during the rainy season!

  • We then visited another hanging bridge, a picturesque spot perfect for couples and photographers. Lunch was another satisfying affair, with parotta, beef curry (the Kerala style is amazing!), and egg on the menu.
  • After spending some time by the river crossing and taking some photos, we headed to Anakulam Check Dam. The sight of a football match in progress amidst the rain, with locals cheering passionately, was a delightful glimpse into Kerala culture.

  • The highlight of the day, however, was witnessing a herd of wild elephants coming down from the forest to drink water at Anakulam. It was a breathtaking experience, and we were lucky enough to capture some amazing photos.
  • With our hearts full of memories, we boarded the jeep back to Munnar, where we caught a bus back to Theni. On the bus ride, we reminisced about our incredible weekend trip, amazed at how this sudden plan had turned into such a fantastic and budget-friendly adventure.
